F-1 Orientation & Check-In

The Center for Global Engagement is committed to your success as an F-1 international student at FSU. We have developed a helpful two-step international student orientation to provide you with important information about maintaining your immigration status, as well as what you need to know about your new university and city. Completion of BOTH steps is MANDATORY in order for you to be able to register for classes at FSU. There is no charge for this orientation, but you must register online in advance.

Step 1: Online Immigration Session

Before you come to the U.S.--Watch this brief presentation on maintaining your F-1 immigration status. You will be directed to take an online quiz on the information presented in the Online Immigration Session. You must first pass the quiz before you can register for your specific International Student Check-In & Orientation date and time (Step 2). Complete the Online Immigration Session as soon as possible after it becomes accessible online so that you reserve a space on your preferred International Student Check-In & Orientation date!

The Online Immigration Session will become accessible online on the dates below. We will send students who have received I-20s an email notification with further instructions on or before these dates:

  • Summer 2014 admitted students: April 21, 2014
  • Fall 2014 admitted students: May 21, 2014
Step 2 : International Student Check-In & Orientation

Attendance at one of the International Student Check-In & Orientation sessions is mandatory for all new incoming students. The chart below gives the scheduled dates and times. This orientation provides information about campus resources and healthcare in the U.S. and offers a great way to meet other students and learn the important information you need to know to have a successful start at FSU. Advance online registration for a specific date & time is required.

During the session we will copy your important immigration documents. To complete your required immigration Check-In, you must bring ALL of the following documents with you to your scheduled International Student Check-In & Orientation session:

  • I-20 document (and I-20s for dependents, if any)
  • Passport with valid U.S. visa inside ( and passports for dependents, if any )
  • I-94 Arrival/Departure Record printout
  • Provide your local address and phone number in Tallahassee, even if it is only temporary (a hotel, friend's house, etc.).
  • Contact information for emergency contact person (in or outside the U.S.)
Planning Your Arrival

You can enter the U.S. up to 30 days prior to the start date on your I-20. (Transfer students who are already in the U.S. in F-1 status are considered "continuing" students and are not subject to this 30-day period). The start date on your I-20 is the first day of classes. Plan to arrive in Tallahassee in time to attend your scheduled International Student Check-In & Orientation at the Center for Global Engagement and to attend the other required university orientations.
